Visitor's visas are issued under Section 11 of the Immigration Act. Citizens of visa-exempt countries receive a visitor's visa at the port of entry, usually for 30 or 90 days; others must apply before travelling. A visitor's visa can be extended through VFS Global before it expires, and longer stays of more than three months are possible for specific purposes such as research, volunteering or visiting family. A visitor's visa does not allow you to work.

How long can I stay on a visitor's visa?
Visa-exempt visitors usually receive 30 or 90 days at the port of entry, depending on nationality. Issued visitor's visas can be for up to three months, and longer-stay visitor's visas are possible for specific purposes.
Can I extend my visitor's visa while in South Africa?
Yes. You can apply through VFS Global to extend your visitor's visa, but you must apply before it expires. We prepare the extension and supporting letters.
Can I work on a visitor's visa?
No. A visitor's visa does not permit employment. If you have a job offer, you need a work visa.
Can I change my visitor's visa to a spousal or work visa?
Generally visitor's visa holders must apply for a different visa from outside South Africa. In exceptional circumstances an application can be made inside the country – see our waivers service.
What happens if I overstay my visitor's visa?
Overstaying can lead to being declared undesirable – 12 months for 30 days or less, and five years for longer overstays. Act before your visa expires.
My parents want to visit from abroad – what do they need?
Depending on nationality, they may need a visitor's visa before travelling, plus your invitation letter, proof of accommodation and their proof of funds. We prepare the full pack.
